The population growth, the increase of our consumption, energy use and land use changes puts a high pressure on our natural ecosystems leading to o.a. decrease of water quality, biodiversity loss and food insecurity. With remote sensing we can monitor our changing environment in great detail, provide a baseline and evaluate the response of this environment to certain management practices.
The Local Environmental Monitoring team is part of VITO's remote sensing department and provides spatial information based on remotely sensed data for precision agriculture, biodiversity and water quality monitoring on a local to regional scale. For this we use various images from satellites, but also airborne and UAV platforms, and analyse the data to deliver maps tailored to the end-user’s needs.
On this website we show you what kind of expertise we have and give you an overview of our activities, ongoing/recent and past projects and publications.
